Report: Living with Dementia in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland

We heard from more than 350 people across LLR living with Dementia, their families and carers, during our research project last Autumn.

In collaboration with colleagues in Healthwatch Leicester/Leicestershire we engaged with people across the whole Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) area to hear their  experiences of living with dementia.

We found wide inconsistencies across LLR in the way diagnoses are made and what services are available and accessible for people living with dementia, from the first suspicions of memory problems onwards.

Our recommendations:

  1. Improved access to primary, secondary and community care services where the ongoing physical and mental health care needs are taken seriously.
  2. Timely referrals and appointments for diagnosis and ongoing specialist care.
  3. Appropriate, timely and professional information about the progression of dementia, future planning, care, benefits and support services, from both the health and social care sector and the voluntary and community sector.
  4. Easier access to more responsive social services.
  5. More equitable access to Admiral Nurses and voluntary and community groups for support and social activities.
