Healthwatch Enter and View Report highlights patient experience at Leicester Royal Infirmary Ophthalmology Department

Healthwatch Rutland along with colleague from Healthwatch Leicester and Leicestershire undertook Enter and View visits in November 2024 to the Leicester Royal Infirmary Ophthalmology Department.

The visits aimed to gather first-hand feedback from patients and observe service delivery across key areas including Eye Casualty and Eye Clinics.

What Patients Told Us

Patients were positive about the care and professionalism of staff, describing them as kind, efficient, and helpful. Many commented on the smooth organisation of appointments and clarity of communication before visits.

However, some challenges were raised:

  • Long waiting times, especially for routine appointments
  • Parking difficulties and overcrowded waiting areas
  • Limited refreshments and poor signage in parts of the department
  • Inconsistent communication about cancelled or rescheduled appointments

Key recommendations include extending clinic hours, improving internal signage and communication, upgrading waiting facilities, and addressing accessibility and comfort - particularly for vulnerable patients and children.

Healthwatch thanks the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for facilitating the visits and patients who shared their experiences with us.
