Leicester Royal Infirmary Emergency Department Visit Report

A look inside the Adults Emergency Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary

Healthwatch Leicester, Healthwatch Leicestershire and Healthwatch Rutland wanted to explore people’s experiences of the Adults Emergency Department (ED) at Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI).

We undertook Enter & View visits on Friday 23 September 2022, 7am-7pm and Monday 26 September 2022, 7am-7pm. We spoke with patients, their friends, carers, and family members listening to their experiences of accessing emergency services.

Our report highlights what patients told us that works well but also where there are problems with the services provided. We spoke to 139 people.

  • 78% of people tried to get help elsewhere before coming to the ED.
  • 62% of the people we spoke to contacted their GP practice before attending the ED.

The patient feedback we received shows high praise for medical staff and treatment once seen. However, patients are sharing increasing struggles of, generally, navigating emergency care systems and, specifically, their difficulties with LRI ED processes and environment.
